Author Interview + Giveaway: Suzanne Johnson

Today, I would like to welcome Suzanne Johnson to Sara's Urban Fantasy Blog. Her latest book, River Road, released yesterday. She is here today to answer some questions, and if you stick around until the end, there's details about the blog tour giveaway.

Sara: How would you describe River Road, for readers who haven’t heard of it before?

Suzanne: It’s the second book in the Sentinels of New Orleans series, after Royal Street, but it can stand alone. It’s the story of a wizard, DJ, whose job it is to police the borders between the modern world and the world Beyond. Humans aren’t aware of magic in this world, and after Hurricane Katrina opens the preternatural floodgates, she has her hands full! In River Road, she has to deal with feuding merpeople, someone poisoning the Mississippi River, and the attentions of the undead pirate Jean Lafitte.

Sara In three words, how would you describe your main characters?

Suzanne: Snarky chaos magnet.

Sara: Do you have a favorite character to write? Is there a character that’s a bit harder than the rest to write?

Suzanne: My favorite character to write -- and also the most challenging -- is the pirate Jean Lafitte. In real life, he was a famous, very powerful French-born pirate who ruled the Gulf in early 19th-century New Orleans. In my world he’s given physical immortality through the magic of human memory. So Jean is forever up to his neck in whatever chaos is going on. The fun (and challenging) thing about Jean Lafitte is to stick to the nature of the historic figure, to some degree anyway, and make him morally ambiguous as he was in life -- but also sexy and likeable. He’s like cheesecake to my heroine DJ -- addictive, sweet, and very, very bad for you in large doses.

Sara: What sets River Road apart from other urban fantasy?

Suzanne: I think it’s depth of the world-building -- not only the world of magic and the different species, but also how the characters are grounded in the culture and history of South Louisiana. You couldn’t pick up the story in River Road, set it in any other place on earth, and have it make sense whatsoever. The mermen are Cajun aquatic shapeshifters who work in the South Louisiana fishing industry, for example. (And a portion of author royalties from this book goes to the Greater New Orleans Foundation for its oil spill relief fund, by the way, to help the people of Southeast Louisiana who continue to be impacted by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.)

Sara: Where did the idea for the series come from? Is it something you have always wanted to write or did it sneak up on you?

Suzanne: The whole idea for the series came from my own experiences as a New Orleanian during Hurricane Katrina. I’ve spent my career in editing and feature writing for magazines, and hadn’t really thought about writing fiction until the storm. Afterward, I needed some way to exorcise my own demons, and that’s how it all started. It was all built around the what-if: What if, when Hurricane Katrina pushed the waters of Lake Pontchartrain into New Orleans, the storm also tore down the “metaphysical levees” between the modern world and the world Beyond?

Sara: Hurricane Katrina played a big role in the first novel of this series, Royal Street. Is there a significant event that River Road is based around?

Suzanne: Not really. Much of River Road is set in Plaquemines Parish, which lies just southeast of metro New Orleans. Plaquemines was badly impacted by the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010 (then took another hard hit from Hurricane Isaac this year), but the first draft of River Road had already been written when the spill occurred. My editor and I debated whether to change the timeline of the book to reflect the disaster, but decided not to. So it’s really coincidental. Plaquemines, which is about half wetlands and tied to the Mississippi River more than any other Louisiana parish other than perhaps Orleans, is an area I love and find interesting.

Sara: Tell us a little about your writing process. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Suzanne: I’m definitely a plotter. I have a full-time day job at a university, and do a lot of blogging in addition to writing a couple of series, so I have to maximize my limited writing time. I usually write from about 7:30-11 p.m. every evening, and pretty much all day on Sunday.

Sara: Are there any genres you would like to branch out to in the future?

Suzanne: I think historical fantasy would be fun to write, but I’d have to find a historical event or era that fascinated me enough to immerse myself in all the research that would be required. But it could happen...

Sara: What are your influences both in and out of urban fantasy?

Suzanne: Outside of urban fantasy, I’m a big fan of the nonfiction writing of Rick Bragg, especially his memoirs All Over But the Shouting and Eva’s Man. He knows how to tell a story in such evocative (and funny) language that you forget you’re reading nonfiction. In urban fantasy, I love Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series and Kim Harrison’s Hollows. Both funny, sharp series that have kept it fresh even after a lot of books.

Sara: What are you currently reading?

Suzanne: I’m reading Cynthia Eden’s new Angel in Chains, a paranormal romance, and am on book five, Wolves of the Calla, of an online read of Stephen King’s entire Dark Tower series that I’m leading for tor.com. We started about a year and a half ago!

Thanks Suzanne for stopping by! Now, for the giveaway details. Suzanne is offering two $25 gift cards to an online bookseller of choice to two commenters throughout the River Road blog tour. Plus, a mystery book from her stash will be awarded at each stop. Suzanne will be choosing the gift card winners at the end of the blog tour, and I will announce the winner of the mystery book on Saturday November 24th. To enter, just leave a valid e-mail address and answer the following question in the comments:

What is you favorite type of paranormal character and why?

This giveaway is open internationally and will close at midnight Friday November 23rd.

Title: River Road
Author: Suzanne Johnson
Summary:
Hurricane Katrina is long gone, but the preternatural storm rages on in New Orleans. New species from the Beyond moved into Louisiana after the hurricane destroyed the borders between worlds, and it falls to wizard sentinel Drusilla Jaco and her partner, Alex Warin, to keep the preternaturals peaceful and the humans unaware. But a war is brewing between two clans of Cajun merpeople in Plaquemines Parish, and down in the swamp, DJ learns, there’s more stirring than angry mermen and the threat of a were-gator.

Wizards are dying, and something -- or someone -- from the Beyond is poisoning the waters of the mighty Mississippi, threatening the humans who live and work along the river. DJ and Alex must figure out what unearthly source is contaminating the water and who -- or what -- is killing the wizards. Is it a malcontented merman, the naughty nymph, or some other critter altogether? After all, DJ’s undead suitor, the pirate Jean Lafitte, knows his way around a body or two.

It’s anything but smooth sailing on the bayou as the Sentinels of New Orleans series continues.

Author Interview + Giveaway: Delilah S. Dawson

Today, I'd like to welcome Delilah S. Dawson back to the Sara's Urban Fantasy Blog! This past Tuesday, she celebrated the release of The Mysterious Madam Morpho a novella that should keep readers satisfied until Wicked as She Wants comes out next spring.

Sara: Could you describe The Mysterious Madam Morpho in your own words, for readers who haven’t heard of it before?

Delilah: It’s the best 130-page novella you’ll ever read about a sexy butterfly circus! Ahem. Just kidding. The Mysterious Madam Morpho is set in the Sang world of my Blud series from Pocket. Taking place after Wicked as They Come, it follows a magical new act in Criminy’s caravan, a stranger from London with a dark past who meets the artificer responsible for the clockworks. Fun and circus-type sexytimes ensue.

Sara: In three words, how would you describe your main characters?

Delilah: Imogen: Blunt, damaged, brave.
Henry: Creative, reclusive, smoldering.

Sara: Are there bludbunnies in The Mysterious Madam Morpho?

Delilah: The little monsters are unavoidable! But they’re not the thing that goes for Imogen. All of my stories include at least one exciting encounter with Sangish creatures, and this one is... kinda funny, kinda terrifying.

Sara: What inspired the creation of Sangland?

Delilah: The entire world sprung from a scene in a dream -- the one in which Tish meets Criminy in Wicked as They Come. I knew Criminy was a blood drinker but not a vampire, so I had to figure out exactly what a Bludman was. The rest of the world-building involved following logical (and slightly magical!) conclusions from that point. Other big influences include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Tim Burton, Alice in Wonderland, and the album Like Vines by The Hush Sound.

Sara: Can you give us a little taste of Wicked as She Wants to hold us over until April?

Delilah: If you haven’t read Wicked as They Come, Wicked as She Wants is a steamy adventure involving a vicious, blood-drinking princess and a passionate piano player knocking heads and boots as they race across the country in an airship brothel. If you have read book 1, this is my attempt to make Casper Sterling the sexiest man ever.

Sara: Are there any genres you would like to branch out to in the future?

Delilah: Several! My first YA, a creepy paranormal about natural disasters, demons, and Savannah called SERVANTS OF THE STORM, will be out in spring 2014 with Simon Pulse. I also have a clockwork Robin Hood romance in the works, not to mention some more YA. If it’s fast-paced and involves first kisses, I’ll write it. >

Sara: What are you currently reading?

Delilah: Redshirts by John Scalzi, Blood and Silver by James K. Tuck, and The Taker by Alma Katsu. I keep them strategically placed around the house and car so there’s always something available. And I just finished Enclave by the marvelous Ann Aguirre, so I can’t wait to pick up the sequel, Outpost.

Thanks so very, very much for having me! <3

Thanks for stopping by, Delilah! Now, for the giveaway! Because I love the world that Delilah has created in this series, I am giving away two (2) copies of The Mysterious Madam Morpho to two lucky Kindle readers! (If B&N has made an option for gifting Nook books and someone can explain it to me, they can also be Nook copies. I'm still relatively lost when it comes to ereaders and stuff...)

To enter the giveaway, just leave a comment and your e-mail address! The giveaway will run through Monday 10/15 at midnight, and the winners will be chosen and emailed on Tuesday 10/16.

Author Interview: Alex Hughes

Today, I’d like to welcome Alex Hughes to the blog to promote the recent release of Clean, the first book in the Mindspace Investigations series from Roc which came out on September 4th. You can read my review here.

Sara: How would you describe Clean, for readers who haven’t heard of it before?

Alex: Clean is a book about a guy with telepath who is recovering from a drug addiction. He and his partner-slash-love interest Homicide Detective Isabella Cherabino are solving crimes for the future Atlanta police and are currently tracking a serial killer who kills with the mind.

Sara: In three words, how would you describe your main characters?

Alex:
The main character: tortured brilliant telepath
Cherabino: talented haunted workaholic
Swartz: wise calm mentor
Paulsen: no-nonsense competent policewoman

Sara: Do you have a favorite character to write? Is there a character that’s a bit harder than the rest to write?

Alex: I love writing Paulsen –- she’s the boss I never had but always wish I did. Stern and ready to kick you in the ass but also reasonable, well thought-out, and competent. Sometimes Cherabino can be tough; she doesn’t like sharing a lot of her personal stuff even with me, so getting her out on the page correctly is a process.

Sara: What sets Clean apart from other urban fantasy?

Alex: If the definition of urban fantasy is an urban setting where the paranormal elements and the larger-than-life clash with normalcy and real life, then Clean is definitely an urban fantasy. It has telepathy in place of the usual magic and ghoulies, but it definitely clashes them with more normal life in cool ways. Clean has at its heart a science fiction tale instead of the usual fantasy, though. Telepathy takes on the rules of science and technology sits uncomfortably in the background, and mystery and science play big roles. The hero is dark, almost an anti-hero, but he’s making his way and trying to do the right thing. The book will definitely appeal to the urban fantasy reader (I’ve gotten lots of emails from fans of urban fantasy saying they like the book a lot) but it’s very different than the typical one.

Sara: Where did the idea for Clean come from? Is it a novel you have always wanted to write or did it sneak up on you?

Alex: This one definitely snuck up on me. I’d just read Joan D. Vinge’s Catspaw, a story about a tortured telepath, and loved it enough to try to do something similar. A friend of mine at the time was really struggling to move towards health and away from anorexia/bulimia, and her struggle really impacted me. I wanted to talk about that struggle, but I knew I’d need something that was a little easier to understand. I also loved cop shows on TV and thought it might be cool to have a detective type. Thus was born the idea of a tortured telepath who’s struggling towards health from an addiction while solving crimes.

Sara: Can we look forward to anymore novels in the Mindspace Investigations series?

Alex: Absolutely! I have nine books sketched out for the series in total. Book Two (Sharp) will be out in April, and a novella in the same series (Payoff) will be out in March.

Sara: Tell us a little about your writing process. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Alex: By nature, I am definitely a pantser, but in the last few years I’ve been trying to train myself to be a plotter with outlines. The result is something in between; I know where I’m going, but I go off-book a lot. Sometimes that’s my best work, and sometimes that just puts in a lot of fat I need to trim out –- but there’s no way to know until I have an entire draft and can see the shape of the book as a whole.

Sara: What are your influences both in and out of urban fantasy?

Alex: Oh, wow. Big question. I read widely and I’m always influenced by what I read, big-name author or unknown. I’m also influenced by television, the news, and real life. To name a few UF influences, I love Laura Anne Gilman, Tanya Huff, early Laurell K. Hamilton, and Michelle Sagara. Outside of the genre I love C.J. Cherryh, Robert Heinlein, David Weber, Anne McCaffrey and Mercades Lackey, and of course Andre Norton.

Sara: What are you currently reading?

Alex: I’m rereading David Allen’s Getting Things Done. Learning how to promote the book on top of writing and editing has been a little intense, but I’m figuring it out, and Allen’s system seems to work pretty well.

Biography of the Author:
Alex has written since early childhood, and loves great stories in any form including scifi, fantasy, and mystery. Over the years, Alex has lived in many neighborhoods of the sprawling metro Atlanta area. Decatur, the neighborhood on which Clean is centered, was Alex’s college home.

On any given week you can find Alex in the kitchen cooking gourmet Italian food, watching hours of police procedural dramas, and typing madly.

You can find out more about the author and Clean at www.ahugheswriter.com and Facebook.com/ahugheswriter, along with following on twitter @ahugheswriter.

Author Interview + Giveaway: Justin Gustainis

Today, I’d like to welcome Justin Gustainis back to the blog. He's here to to promote the recent release of the second book in his Occult Crime Unit Investigation series, Evil Dark, which came out on April 24th. You can read my review of Hard Spell here and Evil Dark here. Justin has been kind enough to give answer some questions about Evil Dark and offer up a copy to giveaway.

Sara: How would you describe Evil Dark, for readers who haven’t heard of them before?

Justin: Evil Dark is the second book in what I call my “Haunted Scranton” series; it’s a sequel to Hard Spell, which appeared last year. The books are set in an “alternate” universe where the supernatural exists, and everybody knows it. Supernatural creatures (or “supes”) are accepted (more or less) by human society. But in Scranton, when there’s a crime involving supes, either as suspects or victims, the guy who usually gets the call is Sgt. Stan Markowski of the Police Department’s Occult Crimes Unit. He gets valuable assistance from (among others) his partner, Karl Renfer, Rachel Procter (the police department’s “consulting witch”), and his daughter, Christine, who knows quite a bit about the supernatural herself.

In Evil Dark, Stan has two nasty cases on his hands. One involves a bizarre kind of “snuff film” that has surfaced, with a Scranton connection. In each of these videos, two men are seen bound to chairs. Off-screen, the voice of a wizard summons a demon to “possess” one of the men. Once the possession takes place, the possessed man is released and commits gross atrocities on the other man, until he dies.

In the other case, someone has been kidnapping witches and burning them alive. Both perpetrator and motive are unknown, but three women are dead and Stan is determined that there won’t be a fourth –- not in his town.

Sara: Do you have a favorite character to write? Is there a character that’s a bit harder than the rest to write?

Justin: My favorite character has got to be Stan Markowski. There’s some of me in Stan –- but only a certain amount. However, since Stan is the first-person narrator of the series, I get to say and do stuff through him that I could never get away with in real life. Stan’s also quicker with a witty comeback than I am.

I suppose the hardest characters to portray in this book are the members of the Homo Sapien Resistance –- a group of thugs who think all supes are subhuman. In Stan’s world, they’re the equivalent of our neo-Nazi skinhead racists. Not only do I have trouble expressing their point of view, it’s hard to write about them without turning them into caricatures.

Sara: Will we meet any new characters in Evil Dark?

Justin: A whole bunch of them. Let’s see... there’s Sharkey, a dhampire (half-vampire, half human) hit man who’s known as “walking death.” Give Sharkey a job and he never quits –- never. Then you have Patton Wilson, shadowy head of a radical religious sect that appears to have more than prayer and preaching on its mind. There are a couple of FBI agents visiting Scranton from the Behavioral Science Unit at Quantico, who may be more than what they seem. And there are several guys dressed in black running around who have apparently seen too many Chuck Norris movies.

Sara: Can we look forward to more books after Evil Dark? Do you have a set amount of books planned for the series?

Justin: I have one more book under contract for the “Haunted Scranton” series. It’s called Known Devil and concerns (among other things) a war that has erupted in the streets of Scranton between two criminal gangs, who happen to be made up of vampires. After that, it depends on whether the publisher wants more books. If the first three have sold well, he probably will. So Stan’s future is in your hands, gentle readers. The books make great graduation or Father’s Day gifts, IMHO.

Sara: Do you have any other projects in the works? Are there any genres you’d like to branch out to in the future?

Justin: I’ve also been writing a series for another publisher, Solaris, about occult investigator Quincey Morris and his partner, white witch Libby Chastain. The last of the three novels I contracted for, Sympathy for the Devil, appeared last year. Solaris has now asked me to write two Morris and Chastain novellas (of about 50,000 words each). They will be sold separately in digital format, and collected between covers for a print edition. The first one of these, Play with Fire, should be out next fall.

Sara: What are you currently reading?

Justin: I just finished reading the new edition of Kim Newman’s The Bloody Red Baron, second book in his “Anno Dracula” series. Both the book, and the series, are terrific. Now I’m going back to Stephen King’s 11/22/63, about a guy who goes back in time to try stopping the Kennedy assassination. I had started it last fall, but had to put it aside when real life intervened. I hate it when that happens.

Thanks again for stopping by! Now for the giveaway. Justin has generously offered up one (1) copy of Evil Dark to one (1) lucky reader, their choice of a signed print copy or a digital copy. To be entered, just answer the following question:
This series is the only one I've read that was based in an alternate Scranton. Is there a city or town you would like to see showcased in an Urban Fantasy series?

Giveaway Rules:
1. Signed print copy option open to US only. Digital copy open internationally.
2. Must answer question and leave valid e-mail address.
3. Giveaway ends at 11:59PM Monday June 11th.
4. Winner will be announced on Tuesday June 12th.

Title: Evil Dark
Author: Justin Gustainis
Series: Occult Crime Unit Investigation #2
Summary:
My name's Markowski. I carry a badge. Also, a crucifix, some wooden stakes, a big vial of holy water, and a 9mm Beretta loaded with silver bullets.

A series of seemingly motiveless murders of supernatural creatures points to a vigilante targeting the supe community. Markowski wouldn't normally have much of a problem with that, but his daughter may be next on the killer's list...

Author Interview: Jess Haines

Today, I’d like to welcome Jess Haines to the blog. She’s here to kick off the blog tour for the fourth book in her H&W Investigations series, STALKING THE OTHERS, which come out on July 3rd. You can read my review of HUNTED BY THE OTHERS here and TAKEN BY THE OTHERS here. And stick around! Kensington is hosting a giveaway for the blog tour and the Rafflecopter form can be found at the end of the post.

Sara: How would you describe Stalking the Others, for readers who haven’t heard of it before?

Jess: This is the fourth book in my series, so let me start with a short recap of the other three:

Book 1 –- HUNTED BY THE OTHERS: Shiarra Waynest, a private investigator, is blackmailed into retrieving an artifact from a vampire. The problem? As a human, she doesn’t stand a chance against the Others.

Book 2 -– TAKEN BY THE OTHERS: With the artifact destroyed, Shia believes her dealings with the supernaturals in town are over -- but the vampires, werewolves, and monster hunters in town believe otherwise...

Book 3 –- DECEIVED BY THE OTHERS: Determined to get away from the troubles plaguing her in the city, Shia goes on a vacation with her werewolf boyfriend -- along with his entire pack -- in the Catskills.

Book 4 – STALKING THE OTHERS: After the events and subsequent betrayal Shia experienced in the last book, she’s done being pushed around. If she’s going down, she’ll take out as many of her enemies as she can -- and hope that in the process, she keeps whatever humanity she has left...

So, in this book, Shiarra is in a very bad place. She’s lost her family, her boyfriend, and probably her business and license as a private investigator -- and some might feel she’s also lost her marbles. She’s ready to take on the world, and get some payback from the people who turned her life into her version of a living hell.

It’s not recommended as a starting point -- this is the continuation that picks up right where my last book, DECEIVED BY THE OTHERS, left off.

Sara: In three words, how would you describe your main characters?

Jess:
Shiarra: Frazzled, overworked, underpaid
Chaz: Hairy werewolf jock
Royce: Sly, sexy vampire
Sara: Cool, confident friend
Arnold: Geeky, funny mage

Sara: Do you have a favorite character to write? Is there a character that’s a bit harder than the rest to write?

Jess: While you might think Shiarra is the obvious answer, it’s actually Arnold. I love him. He’s like the male version of me. Only with magic powers.

As for one who is harder to write than the rest? Jack. He’s a huge pain in the ass. Every time I think I have that vamp hunter pinned, he surprises me with a new twist to his character.

Sara: What sets Stalking the Others apart from the other Urban Fantasy?

Jess: Most urban fantasy novels center around a protagonist who has special powers. Sookie Stackhouse can read minds, Harry Dresden and Rachel Morgan can cast spells, Anita Blake can raise the dead (and bring all the boys to the yard with her magic hoo-ha), etc.

Shiarra is a vanilla human playing with the big boys in the supernatural community. In that way, she’s my “special snowflake”. She has a couple of magic items to help her out, but for the most part, she has to rely on her wits -- what few she has -- and her friends to help her out.

In STALKING THE OTHERS, there’s a chance that could be taken away from her. Good times, eh?

Sara: If Shiarra could work team up with any Urban Fantasy hero or heroine, who would you want her to work with?

Jess: Harry Dresden (from Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files). I love that guy.

Sara: Can we look forward to any more books in the H&W Investigations series? Are you working on any other projects?

Jess: Right now, I’m contracted through six books, though I’ve got plots in mind for more in the series. There are also some spinoff ideas I’ve been kicking around. We’ll see what happens once book six is done.

Most of my attention right now is on completing the next book in the H&W series, but I’ve got some other stuff I’m working on, too.

If you’re familiar with the series, I’ve got a little something I’m looking for a home for right now that features Mouse, the mute vampiress, and Christoph, the dude in the fetish collar who shows up briefly in DECEIVED and again in STALKING THE OTHERS.

Sara: Tell us a little about your writing process. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Jess: I’m a pantser. All pants, all the time. Much to the occasional dismay of my editor...

As for my process, I sit my butt in the chair and write what comes to me. Of course, I do have to stick to the general outline I gave my editor when he bought books 2-6 on spec, but I often surprise myself with the twists and turns things take along the way. I find it’s a lot more “fresh” if I just let it come instead of trying to force my work to fit a mold.

Sara: What are your influences both in and out of Urban Fantasy?

Jess: Before I was published, I hadn’t had much experience with reading UF. Most of my influences came from outside the genre (though Jim Butcher and Laurell K. Hamilton are to blame for me dipping my toes into the world of writing UF).

For the most part, I’ve always been a fan of cheesy horror and supernatural movies. Buffy, Fright Night, Tremors, The Howling -- you name it, I’ve probably watched it. My tastes in books were pretty eclectic. I’ve probably read 90% of the pre-Fifth Age DragonLance novels, and love authors like Stephen King, Terry Goodkind, Michael Crichton, Kim Harrison, Jim Butcher, etc. I could put together a laundry list, but if it had vampires or dragons in it, I probably read it as a kid. I’d like to think those books helped warp my twisted young mind. *g*

Sara: What are you currently reading?

Jess: I’m currently reading Jennifer Armintrout’s QUEENE OF LIGHT. You might know Jennifer from her très amusing recaps of the novel 50 SHADES OF GREY: http://jenniferarmintrout.blogspot.com/search/label/Throwing%20Shades

I plan on reading the next two books (CHILD OF DARKNESS and VEIL OF SHADOWS) as soon as possible. I’m about halfway done with the first book, and so far it’s fabulous!

Thanks again for having me, Sara!

Thanks for stopping by Jess! And now for the giveaway. Kensington is offering 15 copies of STALKING THE OTHERS to readers from US/Canada. All you have to do is fill out the Rafflecopter form below. Good luck!

Author Interview: Lynda Hilburn

Today, I'd like to welcome Lynda Hilburn to the blog! Earlier this month, on April 3rd, she celebrated the release of The Vampire Shrink.

Sara: How would you describe The Vampire Shrink, for readers who haven’t heard of it before?

Lynda: Here’s how my USA publisher describes it:

A sizzlingly sexy urban fantasy sure to feed the hunger of ravenous, vampire-loving fans.

Kismet Knight, a brainy Denver-based psychologist with a stalled career and a nonexistent love life, is about to have her world rocked. Not only does her newest patient, Midnight, long to become a vampire, but the teenager insists that a coven of the undead hangs out at a local goth club. The always-rational Kismet dismisses Midnight's claims as the delusions of an attention-starved girl -- until bodies start turning up drained of blood and the hottest self-proclaimed vampire ever to walk the face of the earth enters her office.

What's real? What's not? As inexplicable events and romantic opportunities pile up, along with the corpses, Kismet finds herself in a whirlwind of passion, mystery, and danger. But this tough and funny heroine -- who doesn't do damsel in distress -- is about to turn the vampire-meets-girl convention on its head.

Sara: In three words, how would you describe you main characters?

Lynda: Cerebral, clever, quirky.

Sara: Do you have a favorite character to write? Is there a character that’s a bit harder than the rest to write?

Lynda: The main female character, Kismet Knight, is my favorite to write because she’s an idealized version of me. I can make up all sorts of exciting experiences for her that I’ll never have! So far, none of the characters in the series has been difficult to write. But Tempest Moon in my Undead in the City novella was challenging. She’d had such a hard life it was difficult to give emotions and depth to a character who has learned to be cold and cynical.

Sara: What sets The Vampire Shrink apart from the other vampire novels?

Lynda: I think it’s the fact (as my British editor says) that the story is both humorous and darkly bloody. My psychologist character behaves realistically, meaning she isn’t easily persuaded by the supernatural. I have had lots of clients in my private psychotherapy practice who claimed to be something I didn’t believe for a minute. No matter how many times they told me over months or years. So, as infuriating as it might be for a few readers who wanted Kismet to “believe” much faster, that’s just not how her mind works. But once she figures it out...

Sara: Can we look forward to a sequel? Are you working on any other projects?

Lynda: I just turned in the manuscript for the new book #2 in the series, Blood Therapy. It should come out in the Fall. The book that used to be #2 (formerly called Dark Harvest) will be re-titled, rewritten/expanded and will be a future book. I also hope to start a second series as soon as I win the lottery and can quit my day job!

Sara: If Kismet could work together with any Urban Fantasy hero or heroine, who would you want her to work with?

Lynda: I think Kismet would have a wonderful time counseling any of the warriors in J.R. Ward’s series, Charlaine Harris’s Sookie, or Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake. I also imagine she’d be professionally challenged by Death from Kalayna Price’s Alex Craft novels. What awesome psychotherapy sessions those would be!

Sara: Tell us a little about your writing process. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Lynda: I’m a pantser! I wish I could plot because I suspect it would save me a ton of time, but that’s not my nature. I literally never know what’s going to show up on the page until I see it. I tend to write in spurts –- I write a half hour, check email, get up and go to the kitchen, stop to click through the TV channels, write another half hour, write a blog post, etc. You get the picture. Short attention span! But if I stick with it long enough, I finish whatever I’m working on.

Sara: What are your influences both in and out of Urban Fantasy?

Lynda: I was mostly influenced to begin with by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the weird fiction of Tom Robbins and Anne Rice’s vampires. Now I read as much mystery/suspense (paranormal and psychological) as paranormals and urban fantasies, especially enjoying the work of Robert Crais, Jeff Lindsay and Stephen White. J.D. Robb’s “In Death” series is a major favorite. And my writing is heavily colored by listening to my clients’ stories.

Sara: What are you currently reading?

Lynda: I just read and enjoyed Darynda Jones’s three novels, the latest J.D. Robb, and am half way through Anne Rice’s The Wolf Gift.

Author Interview: Delilah S. Dawson

Today, I'd like to welcome Delilah S. Dawson to the blog! Last month, she celebrated the release of Wicked as They Come which was a fantastic blend of Paranormal Romance and Steampunk (review coming soon).

Sara: How would you describe Wicked as They Come, for readers who haven’t heard of it before?

Delilah: It’s a steampunk paranormal romance that unfolds in a dark Victorian world where half the population and most of the wild animals are blood drinkers. A gypsy caravan, clockwork animals, a kraken, a ghost, and a very smoldery hero await!

Sara: In three words, how would you describe you main characters?

Delilah: Criminy Stain – corybantic, magical, wicked
Tish/Letitia – good-hearted, spunky, tenacious

Sara: Do you have a favorite character to write? Is there a character that’s a bit harder than the rest to write?

Delilah: Criminy all but writes himself, and his banter is especially fun. I had trouble writing Elvis because he’s such a nasty, prejudiced little dude.

Sara: What sets Wicked as They Come apart from the other Paranormal Romance?

Delilah: The world is entirely unique, merging paranormal with magic with steampunk. It’s dark but doesn’t take itself too seriously. There’s a new spin on vampires. And what other book has blood-drinking bunnies?

Sara: Where did the idea for Wicked as They Come come from? Is it a novel you have always wanted to write or did it sneak up on you?

Delilah: Totally snuck up on me! After watching a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and listening to the album Like Vines by the Hush Sound, I had a dream that I woke up naked on a rock in the forest with this extra-naughty, long-haired version of Mr. Darcy staring at me. The story just naturally flowed from that moment, with little hints from the songs on Like Vines.

Sara: Can we look forward to a sequel? Are you working on any other projects?

Delilah: Yes! Wicked as They Come is the first in a three-book series, each book of which will follow a different romance. The next offering is an e-novella out this October called The Mysterious Madam Morpho, which takes place entirely in Criminy’s Clockwork Caravan. The second book, Wicked as She Wants, is out next spring. It’s excerpted at the end of Wicked as They Come and follows a much debauched and fallen Casper on his adventure with a character based on the story of Princess Anastasia -- if she was a blood drinker. Book three is tentatively slated to be Sang’s version of Moulin Rouge. But I hope I’ll have more chances to write about Criminy and Tish, because I had an entire story arc planned out for them...

Sara: Tell us a little about your writing process. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Delilah: A little of both. I spend a long time meditating on the story seed, and I pretty much know from the beginning how it will end. I have a loose sort of outline with lots of room for adventure in between plot points. I start at the beginning and tramp straight through to the end without stopping and save the fleshing out for later drafts. If I get stalled out, I can jump start the story by running a bath in the dark and listening to music and basically putting myself into a trance. It always works!

Sara: What are your influences both in and out of Paranormal Romance?

Delilah: If we’re talking strictly books, then I love Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series the most, with a big nod to Anne Rice and Charlaine Harris for being my gateway to the genre. When I’m gearing up to write the Big Smex Scene, I reread Karen Marie Moning and Gena Showalter to remind me how it’s done. Outside of PNR, Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander first showed me that romance books could also be stories that touched your heart and mind. And I love Deanna Raybourn’s Lady Julie Grey series, too.

Sara: What are you currently reading?

Delilah: I’ve got Blood and Bullets by James R. Tuck in my purse, Paper Towns by John Green on my bedside table, and Timeless by Gail Carriger on my Nook. Oh, and my husband bought my copy of Matthew Stover’s Caine’s Law today, which I’ve been waiting on forever! The really cool part is that I’ve gotten to know James, Gail, and Matt online and love their books all the more, knowing what warm and lovely people they are.

Thanks so much for interviewing me! If anyone has any burning questions, I can always be found on Twitter (@DelilahSDawson), on Facebook (facebook.com/DelilahSDawson), and on my blog (delilahsdawson.com). I don’t bite. Probably. =)

Author Interview + Giveaway: Christina Henry

Today I'd like to welcome back Christina Henry, author of the Madeline Black Urban Fantasy series from Ace. I absolutely loved the first two books in this series, and can't wait for the third, Black Howl, which comes out next Tuesday (02/28).

Sara: How would you describe Black Howl, for readers who haven’t heard of it before?

Christina: Maddy's life is getting really complicated in this book. Ghosts of the dead are popping up all over Chicago, and their deaths haven't been foreseen by the Agency, which means they're outside the natural order. And if deaths are occurring outside the natural order then that means something big and bad is hanging around.

Plus, Wade, the alpha of the werewolf pack that befriended Maddy in Black Night, has been kidnapped and Maddy's got to find him. On top of everything else, Gabriel is her thrall now, so if you thought their relationship was difficult before you haven't seen anything yet.

Sara: Do you have a favorite character to write? Is there a character that’s a bit harder than the rest to write?

Christina: Beezle is my favorite character to write. He gets the best lines and he gets to eat all the junk food, which is pretty much my dream job (after writing, of course).

Nathaniel is probably the most difficult character for me to write, because nothing about him is simple.

Sara: Will we meet any new characters in Black Howl?

Christina: Yes, there are a few new characters, but not too many. If there are too many characters it gets hard to write. I don’t know how some writers do it. I’m always impressed by these giant books that have a cast of thousands.

Sara: Last time, you said you were working on book four. How many books are planned for the series?

Christina: Right now there are at least six books planned for the series.

Sara: If Beezle could work team up with any Urban Fantasy sidekick, who would you want him to work with?

Christina: Bob from Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series. They could wreak havoc on the streets of Chicago!

Sara: Tell us a little about your writing process. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Christina: A pantser! I’ve now written four books and every one of them turned out differently than I’d thought they would. I write chronologically, so I just kind of let things unfold as I go.

Sara: What are you currently reading?

Christina: Bill Bryson’s At Home. It’s full of amazing facts. I want to read whole sections of it to anyone who will listen.

Thank you so much for having me here, Sara!

Thanks to Ace, I have one (1) print copy of Black Howl to giveaway to a lucky commenter. Just answer the following question: Which Urban Fantasy sidekick would you, the reader, want Beezle to team up with?

Giveaway Rules:
1. Must include a valid e-mail address.
2. Open to US and Canada only.
3. Giveaway ends Saturday March 3rd.
4. Winners will be chosen via Random.org.

Author Interview: Kristen Painter

Today I'd like to welcome Kristen Painter, author of the House of Comarré series from Orbit. The second book in the series, Flesh and Blood just released this past Tuesday (October 25th) and I can't wait to read it after enjoying book one so much. You can see my review of Blood Rights here.

Sara: How would you describe the House of Comarré series, for readers who haven’t heard of it before?

Kristen: I always tell people it’s like Underworld meets Memoirs of a Geisha. If you haven’t seen either of those movies, think vampires that don’t sparkle with blood slaves and a bunch of other creatures.

Sara: How would you describe each of your main characters in three words?

Kristen: Mal –- dark, dangerous, tortured
Chrysabelle –- scared, learning, vulnerable

Sara: Do you have a favorite character to write? Is there a character that’s a bit harder than the rest to write?

Kristen: Chrysabelle is my hardest character to write because she’s the most unlike me. She’s trying to find her place in the world, struggling to come to terms with all the changes in her life. A lot of things are brand new for her and she has a lot of baggage to either deal with or leave behind.

Sara: What sets your series apart from the rest of the Urban Fantasy genre?

Kristen: I’m not sure I’m the right one to answer that question as I’ve purposefully tried not be influenced by the work of other authors while creating this series, which basically means I haven’t read much in the UF genre for awhile. It’s tough because there are so many good books out there!

Sara: How many more novels set in Chrysabelle’s world can we look forward to?

Kristen: There will be five in total in the House of Comarré series. I’m working on book five, Last Blood, right now.

Sara: If Chrysabelle could work together with any Urban Fantasy hero or heroine, who would you want her to work with?

Kristen: I think my hero, Mal, would have something to say about this. As in, like hell that’s going to happen. Therefore I feel it’s in my best interest not to answer this question since I need him to cooperate with me a little while longer.

Sara: Tell us a little about your writing process. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Kristen: I’m mostly a pantser. I tend to know my beginnings, some things that happen in the middle and have a general sense of the end. Whatever else happens is just the fun of writing. Without those little discoveries, I’d probably get bored and read all day.

Sara: Do you have any other projects in the works? Are there any genres you’d like to branch out to in the future?

Kristen: The only project I’m working on at the moment is book five in the series, Last Blood. As for other genres, I’d love to get into writing comics or graphic novels.

Sara: What are your influences both in and out of Urban Fantasy?

Kristen: Too many to name! Everything from movies to art to comics to games. I just love the strange and interesting.

Sara: What are you currently reading?

Kristen: The ARC of Shadow Ops: Control Point by Myke Cole. I don’t usually read military fantasy, but I forced Myke to promise to send me an ARC at Comic Con –- which he did –- so I’m happily reading it!

Thanks again for stopping by, Kristen! And for readers who want to learn more about Kristen or the series, there is a chat tonight at 9pm. I've heard there will be books given away at this chat, so you should definitely check it out. Here are the details:

Author Interview + Giveaway: Jennifer Estep

I'd like to welcome back urban fantasy author Jennifer Estep! She's the author of two wonderful series, the urban fantasy Elemental Assassins series and the young adult Mythos Academy series. Today, we're celebrating the recent release of her fifth Elemental Assassins book, Spider's Revenge.

Sara: How would you describe Spider’s Revenge, for readers who haven’t heard of it before?

Jennifer: Spider’s Revenge in the fifth book in my Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series that was released on Sept. 27. The books focus on Gin Blanco, an assassin codenamed the Spider who can cotrol the elements of Ice and Stone. When she’s not busy killing people and righting wrongs, Gin runs a barbecue restaurant called the Pork Pit in the fictional Southern metropolis of Ashland. The city is also home to giants, dwarves, vampires, and elementals –- Air, Fire, Ice, and Stone. Other books in the series are Spider’s Bite, Web of Lies, Venom, and Tangled Threads.

In Spider’s Revenge, Gin is gearing up to finally go toe-to-toe with Mab Monroe, the Fire elemental who murdered Gin’s family when Gin was a kid. Also, Gin has to deal with the bounty hunters that Mab has hired to come to Ashland to track down the Spider –- and there’s a bounty on the head of Gin’s sister, Bria, as well. So there’s a lot of action in the book, which I hope will appeal to readers.

Sara: Do you have a favorite character to write? Is there a character that’s a bit harder than the rest to write?

Jennifer: Finnegan Lane, Gin’s foster brother, is a lot of fun for me to write. Finn is a shameless, greedy womanizer who says exactly what he wants to whenever he wants to –- no matter who’s listening or what the consequences might be. Finn usually gets the best and funniest lines.

Bria is a bit difficult to write at times, mainly because her character is in between two worlds. On one hand, Bria is a good, honest cop. On the other, she has Gin, an assassin, as her sister. So it’s sometimes challenging to have Bria straddle those two worlds and have her struggle with where her heart and loyalties lie versus her job.

Sara: How many more novels set in Gin’s world can we look forward to?

Jennifer: I am currently under contract for two more Elemental Assassin books. By a Thread, the sixth book, will be released in March 2012, while the seventh book (untitled) is scheduled for an August 2012 release.

I’d love to write even more books in the series beyond these. I think there are a lot of Gin stories left to tell.

Sara: If Gin could work together with any Urban Fantasy hero or heroine, who would you want her to work with?

Jennifer: Good question! Hmm. There are a lot of great heroes and heroines in urban fantasy, but I would say Harry Dresden from the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. I think Gin and Harry would make a pretty formidable team, with her deadly skills and his magic. Plus, I think it would just be fun to have Gin hang out with Bob the skull, Murphy, and the other characters in the series.

Sara: If you could have an elemental power, which element would you choose?

Jennifer: Well, my hands are almost always cold, so I would have to go with Ice magic. LOL. Plus, it would be handy for cooling down on a hot summer day, and we’ve had plenty of those this year.

Really, though, I think all the elemental powers in my books would be cool to have. It would be interesting (and dangerous!) to be able to create fire with your bare hands or turn your skin into the equivalent of human marble so that nothing could hurt you. I always have a lot of fun thinking about the elemental magic and how Gin and all the other characters can use it and what they might do with it.

Sara: Do you have any other projects in the works? Are there any genres you’d like to branch out to in the future?

Jennifer: I also write the Mythos Academy young adult urban fantasy series. The books focus on Gwen Frost, a 17-year-old Gypsy girl who has the gift of psychometry, or the ability to know an object’s history just by touching it. After a serious freak-out with her magic, Gwen is shipped off to Mythos Academy, a school for the descendants of ancient warriors like Spartans, Valkyries, Amazons, and more.

Touch of Frost, the first book in the series, was released in August. First Frost, a prequel e-story to the series, is available as a 99-cent download. Kiss of Frost, the second book, will be released Nov. 29. Dark Frost, the third book, will be out in June 2012.

Also, Halloween Frost, a Mythos Academy e-story, can be found in the Entangled e-anthology that I am participating in with several other authors. The e-anthology is available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other booksellers. All proceeds from Entangled will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. For more information about all my books, folks can visit my website at www.jenniferestep.com.

I’d love to branch out into even more genres. I’d love to write a western someday, along with a romantic suspense book and a heist book.

Sara: I saw that your Bigtime novels are being released in e-book format with new covers. Can you tell us a bit more about them?

Jennifer: Of course. The Bigtime paranormal romance series features sexy superheroes, evil ubervillains, and smart, sassy gals looking for love. The books are set in Bigtime, a fictional city where everything is bright, colorful, fun, and larger-than-life, including the zany characters.

Books in the series are Karma Girl, Hot Mama, and Jinx, and they are available as $2.99 e-books from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, All Romance Ebooks, and Smashwords.

Sara: What are you currently reading?

Jennifer: I’m in between books right now, but some of the titles in my TBR pile are Carte Blanche by Jeffrey Deaver; Among Thieves by Douglas Hulick; Uncommon Criminals by Ally Carter; Last Chance by Christy Reece; and Kissing Comfort by Jo Goodman -– along with about twenty other books. I always wish I had more time to read. Happy reading, everyone!

Author Interview + Giveaway: Justin Gustainis

Today, I'd like to introduce Justin Gustainis and thank him for stopping by the blog. I recently finished Hard Spell, the first novel in his new Occult Crimes Unit Investigation series that released on July 26th, and I loved it. Look for my 4.5 Star review coming soon.

Sara: How would you describe Hard Spell, for readers who haven’t heard of it before?

Justin: In this “alternate” universe, the supernatural really exists –- and everybody knows it. Supernatural creatures are accepted –- if not always loved. The “supes” are citizens, but that means they have to obey the law. In Scranton, PA, when a supe crosses the line, Detective Sgt. Stan Markowski of the Occult Crimes Unit is the one they call.

Somebody in Scranton is killing vampires, leaving the corpses covered in occult symbols. It appears that a wizard is using the vampire deaths as sacrifices in some really big, nasty spell. And nobody, including Stan Markowski, knows which vampire sacrifice will trigger the Big Bad: the next one –- or the last one?

Think Dragnet meets Dracula –- that should give you a pretty good sense of the book (and the series).

Sara: How would you describe each of your main characters in three words?

Justin:
Stan Markowski: brave, experienced, cynical
Karl Renfer (Stan’s partner): young, eager, impulsive
Christine Markowski (Stan’s daughter): young, estranged, “different”
Ernst Vollman (vampire “King” of Scranton): ancient, jaded, worried
Lacey Brennan (Stan’s counterpart in nearby Wilkes-Barre): foul-mouthed, hyper-competent, hot
Sligo (the wizard): evil, eviler, evilest

Sara: What sets your series apart from the rest of the Urban Fantasy genre?

Justin: You mean, apart from the fact that it’s set in Scranton? Well, it has some characteristics that, while not unique in the genre, are less than common: the protagonist is male, without supernatural powers, and a cop; there’s none of that icky love stuff (this is not Paranormal Romance, people); and Markowski’s family relationships are... complicated.

Sara: Tell us a little about your writing process. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Justin: More the latter. I start with a situation, and a character. Then I throw the character into the situation and follow him/her around, watching what happens. Plotting is the hardest part of the writing process for me.

Sara: Where did the idea for Hard Spell come from? Is it a novel you have always wanted to write or did it sneak up on you?

Justin: It’s hard to say exactly when it developed. On paper, it originated as a short story (called “Demons Don’t Die”) that I wrote at the Odyssey Writing Workshop in 2008. I think the idea began some time earlier, with a phrase that popped into my head one day while I was thinking about something else: “The mean streets of Scranton are haunted now.” Don’t ask me where that came from, although I was recently re-reading Stephen King’s Salems Lot and came across this line: “These roads are haunted now.” When I steal, I only steal from the best, even when it’s subconscious.

Sara: If Stan could work together with any Urban Fantasy heroine, who would you want him to work with?

Justin: Anita Blake, I think. Stan needs to get lucky, and I understand that every guy who hangs around with Anita gets lucky, sooner or later. Usually sooner. The only thing against him is that he’s human, and not a were-leopard, or something. But I still think he’d have a chance.

Sara: Can we look forward to more books after Hard Spell?

Justin: I’m already behind schedule on the sequel, Evil Dark. It’s supposed to be out in February. We’ll see. And I have a contract for one more book in the series. After that, it’s up to the publisher.

Sara: What are your influences both in and out of Urban Fantasy?

Justin: Outside of urban fantasy, most of my influences come from mystery writers, including Raymond Chandler, John D. MacDonald, Ross Thomas, Thomas Perry, and Robert Crais. Within urban fantasy, early influences would include Carl Kolchak in The Night Stalker (the movie, not the series – either one), a Gene Roddenberry pilot that never got made into a series, Spectra, and Tanya Huff’s “Blood” novels (Blood Price, Blood Trail, etc.). And Stephen King, if he can be considered an “urban fantasy” influence.

Sara: What are you currently reading?

Justin: I usually have several books going at the same time (it’s a great way to postpone writing). Right now, they include Kill the Dead by Richard Kadrey, Ghost Story by Jim Butcher, and Ellen Datlow’s new anthology, Supernatural Noir.

Thanks again for stopping by, Justin! And don't forget to check out the trailer for Hard Spell.

I enjoyed Hard Spell so much, I'd like to pass my copy on to one lucky winner. To enter, just leave a valid e-mail address and answer the following question: Scranton was a very interesting choice of setting for an Urban Fantasy. What is a city that you would like to see as the center of an Urban Fantasy series that hasn't been done yet?

Stan Markowski is a Detective Sergeant on the Scranton PD's Supernatural Crimes Investigation Unit.

Like the rest of America, Scranton's got an uneasy 'live and let unlive' relationship with the supernatural. But when a vamp puts the bite on an unwilling victim, or some witch casts the wrong kind of spell, that's when they call Markowski. He carries a badge. Also, a crucifix, some wooden stakes, a big vial of holy water, and a 9mm Beretta loaded with silver bullets.

Author Interview + Giveaway: Christina Henry

Last November, I read and enjoyed Black Wings by Christina Henry. So I was really excited to find out I wouldn't have to wait an entire year for the next novel in the series, Black Night (it released this past Tuesday 07/26). I hope to post my 4.5 Star review of Black Night very soon. But first, I have Christina Henry on the blog today answering questions about Black Night (and a giveaway at the end of the post)!

Sara: How would you describe Black Night, for readers who haven’t heard of it before?

Christina: Well, things are not going great for Maddy. Lucifer is manipulating her into a diplomatic mission to the faerie court, and her oh-so-annoying unwanted fiancé Nathaniel is coming along. Unfortunately, the last ambassador was beheaded in front of the entire court for a breach of etiquette and as we know, Maddy has a lot of trouble keeping her mouth shut, especially when she ought to!

Sara: Last time you stopped by I asked you to describe the main characters: Maddy, Beezle, J.B., and Gabriel. In three words, how would you describe some of your other characters?

Christina:
Nathaniel –- Pompous, jealous, well-dressed
Azazel –- Controlling, demanding, powerful
Amarantha –- Vain, selfish, beautiful
Lucifer –- Crafty. Very crafty.

Sara: Can we look forward to any more novels about Maddy and Beezle?

Christina: Yes, there will be at least six books in the series. The third book, Black Howl, is set to be released in March of 2012. I’m working on the fourth book right now.

Sara: If Maddy could work together with any Urban Fantasy heroine, who would you want her to work with?

Christina: Umm, can we make it a hero? My dream would be for Maddy to meet Harry Dresden, hero of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files. The Dresden Files is my favorite urban fantasy series. They both live in Chicago, so it’s possible!

Sara: Beezle is definitely my favorite character in this series. Is there a chance we’ll meet another gargoyle in the future? Maybe a friend or love interest for Beezle?

Christina: I think Beezle is definitely one of a kind. He enjoys feeling superior to humans and he would probably be jealous if another gargoyle showed up on the scene.

Sara: Do you have any other projects in the works?

Christina: I do have an idea for a supernatural mystery series that I’ve been thinking about for some time. Right now I’ve got to concentrate on writing the next Madeline Black book but after that’s done I may have some time to work on this other project and see how it plays out.

Sara: What are you currently reading?

Christina: The Good, the Bad and the Uncanny by Simon R. Green. I’m a couple of books behind in the Nightside series and I’m trying to catch up!

Thanks so much for having me here today, Sara!

Title: Black Night
Author: Christina Henry
Series: Madeline Black #2
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release Date: 07/26/11
Summary:
Madeline Black is an Agent of death, meaning she escorts the souls of people who have died to the afterlife. Of course, not everyone is happy to see her...

If obstinate dead people were all that Maddy had to worry about, life would be much easier. But the best-laid plans of Agents and fallen angels often go awry. Deaths are occurring contrary to the natural order, Maddy's being stalked by foes inside and outside of her family, and her two loves -- her bodyguard, Gabriel, and her doughnut-loving gargoyle, Beezle-have disappeared. But because Maddy is Lucifer's granddaughter, things are expected of her, things like delicate diplomatic missions to other realms.
