Review: First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

Title: First Grave on the Right
Author: Darynda Jones
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: 02/01/11
Buy the Book:
The Book Depository
Summary:
Private investigator Charlotte Davidson was born with three things: a smoking hot ass; a healthy respect for the male anatomy; and the rather odd job title of grim reaper. Since the age of five, she has been helping the departed solve the mysteries of their deaths so they can cross. Thus, when three lawyers from the same law firm are murdered, they come to her to find their killer. In the meantime, she's dealing with a being more powerful, and definitely sexier, than any specter she's ever come across. With the help of a pain-in-the-ass skip tracer, a dead pubescent gangbanger named Angel, and a lifetime supply of sarcasm, Charley sets out to solve the highest profile case of the year and discovers that dodging bullets isn't nearly as dangerous as falling in love.

Plot: 5 Stars
Although this wasn't my first grim reaper novel, it's definitely the funniest grim reaper novel I've ever read. Besides a great sense of humor, the novel also had a very upbeat attitude. Most novels revolving around any sort of reaper tend to be very dark, but this novel was pleasantly peppy. There were moments, especially when learning about Charley's past, that could've led to a much darker novel, but she didn't dwell on the past. The way Charley balanced between people who knew about and understood her powers, and those who didn't believe or just didn't know was very interesting. There was a revelation or two near the end that caught me by surprise, and it'll be fun to read how this factors into future novels.

Pace: 4 Stars
For the most part, this novel had a really good pace. Charley's time was was spread across a number of different tasks, that spanned a realistic amount of time. Between all of the investigating and getting into trouble, there was still time for the characters to recouperate and sleep. There were a couple chapters in the middle where the pace lagged for just a bit. It seemed like Charley got into one too many sticky situations, or argued about a part of the case one too many times. But just as it started to slow down, it picked right back up again. Although the novel didn't end in a cliffhanger, it definitely opened up a whole realm of possibility that will leave readers glad that the next book in the series is out in August.

Characters: 4.5 Stars
This novel was filled with great characters. Charley was my favorite character, due to her sense of humor being very similar to mine. She had a number of one-liners that had me laughing out loud, and she balanced the sarcasm very well. Plus, she named her breasts Danger and Will Robinson! What's not to love? The details of how being a reaper works were also very interesting and unique. Cookie, her friend and co-worker, was also hilarious and I hope she has a bigger role in future books. Charley's family dynamic made for a bit on tension. A few of the ghosts or spirits that Charley deals with daily really make the story at times. Between Mr. Wong, the "hellspawn" and Aunt Lily, there's never a dull moment. Garrett was a wild card; I don't know whether to like or dislike him at the moment. Reyes was the epitome of dark and mysterious, and I hope he doesn't stay quite so mysterious moving forward.

Cover: 4.5 Stars
At first, this cover didn't really do it for me. White covers just don't say paranormal to me. Plus, I'm afraid to get them dirty! But after reading the novel, the cover fits Charley and her story very well. The humor mixed with Charley's positive outlook work well with the color. A darker color choice wouldn't have matched the story quite so well. The pinks scattered across the cover also fit very well. The hot pink really seemed to convey the right tone to go along with Charley's attitude and sense of humor. Had the pinks been pastel or fuscia, it just wouldn't be the same. The choice to show the cover model's feet instead of her face was a very interesting choice; it allowed me to picture Charley how I wanted, while still hinting at the main character. And the scythe was a great addition. Without it, there was nothing about the cover to allude to the paranormal.

Overall: 4.5 Stars

Disclosure: I bought this novel for my own reading pleasure.

Review: The Iron Thorn by Caitlin Kittredge

Title: The Iron Thorn
Author: Caitlin Kittredge
Genre: Steampunk YA
Release Date: 02/22/11
Buy the Book:
The Book Depository
Summary:
In the city of Lovecraft, the Proctors rule and a great Engine turns below the streets, grinding any resistance to their order to dust. The necrovirus is blamed for Lovecraft's epidemic of madness, for the strange and eldritch creatures that roam the streets after dark, and for everything that the city leaders deem Heretical -- born of the belief in magic and witchcraft. And for Aoife Grayson, her time is growing shorter by the day.

Aoife Grayson's family is unique, in the worst way -- every one of them, including her mother and her elder brother Conrad, has gone mad on their 16th birthday. And now, a ward of the state, and one of the only female students at the School of Engines, she is trying to pretend that her fate can be different.

Plot: 4 Stars
The Steampunk details the author brought to the table were my favorite part of this novel. Not only were all of the different vehicles and machines explained in detail, but also the social structure of the world that was built. The city of Lovecraft ran on steam and was controlled by order. There was a slight "Big Brother is watching" feel to the government agency. When Aoife makes it out of the city, on her quest to find her brother, she finds a totally different world out in the countryside. A world not so different from the magic and witchcraft the government is so against. The end of this novel was fantastic. There were a couple twists that threw me completely on my head, and now I can't wait for the next novel to be released. Dean, her other travelling partner, was the polar opposite of Cal, but I enjoyed him more.

Pace: 3 Stars
This was a large novel. It clocks in at a little over five hundred pages. And it felt a little over five hundred pages as I was reading it. Although I did enjoy the details of the book, they were a bit wordy at times. There was also a span in the middle of the novel where Aoife wasn't making much progress in the attempt to find her brother that really slowed the plot down. Even when the plot called for urgency, it didn't always come across as urgent due to the amount of details included in every explaination. But near then end, the twists and turns sucked me back in and the pace picked up for the last one hundred pages.

Characters: 4 Stars
Aoife was a fantastic leading lady. She was a bit of a tomboy and was studying to work with the machines of the city. Even though the government forbids heretics, Aoife never squashes those thoughts, she just learns what she can and cannot say out loud to stay out of trouble. Cal, Aoife's best friend, was really annoying for the majority of the journey. Between his whining and talking down to Aoife, I wanted to punch him in the face. But when he was needed most, he came through in a very surprising way. This information Aoife finds out about her brother and father was very interesting, and I hope it is expanded on in future novels.

Cover: 3 Stars
This cover stands out against it's fellow Young Adult novels, while still blending in a bit. Overall, the cover is a bit dark. I like that you see more of the cover model than just her face. But she looks a bit computer animated. Something about her eyes just doesn't seem real. I'm also a bit confused as to why her clothes are falling off, although her outfit does fit the time period. The birds in the background are a great touch. The curling design behind the title is a detail that is pretty prevelant within many Paranormal Young Adult covers, but it works well when paired with this font. The font chosen is severe and blocky, so the curling design softens it a bit and helps it blend into the rest of the image.

Overall: 3.5 Stars

Author Interview + Giveaway: Linda Robertson

First off, I'd like to thank Linda Robertson for dropping by to answer some questions. I really enjoyed her first novel, Vicious Circle (you can see my review here). The latest book in her Persephone Alcmedi series, Arcane Circle, was released last December.

Sara: How would you describe your Persephone Alcmedi novels, for readers who haven’t heard of them before?

Linda: They are about a witch who, in discovering her destiny, also finds her life will never be the same. There’s family and love and romance, but there’s also danger, betrayal, death and secrets.

Sara: How would you describe each of your main characters in three words?

Linda:
Persephone: Loyal, stubborn, responsible
Johnny: Rock-n-roll, tattoos, sexy
Menessos: Manipulative, regal, sexy

Sara: What sets your series apart from the rest of the Urban Fantasy genre?

Linda: Let me set this up with what doesn’t set me apart. :) Urban Fantasy has its tropes, like the big destiny and the witch-werewolf-vampire union. I’ve got those. I have some of the usual “tools” as well: the powerful spell book, the broom, the wand, the ley line. What’s different is the ley line is painful and addictive, I made up a protrepticus—a spirit housed in a cell phone, etc. I’ve given her tools/powers/sagely-advisors and I’ve also taken them away. I don’t want her to be all powerful. She’s just a dependable girl-next-door who’s forced into all this and struggling with it. I’m on book five and she’s just starting to accept it. Also the series is tight time-wise. We’ve covered only about six weeks of her life.

Sara: Tell us a little about your writing process. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Linda: Yes.*giggles* None of the books have been the same as far as process. Where I am now, I do a little of both. When I played guitar in a cover band, I did my own solos but made sure to hit the high points and low points on time with the original recorded solo. Writing is like that. I document the high and low points of the story in bullet form, arrange them chronologically, check my moon phases etc, and then I write. I used to outline strictly everything thinking it would maximize my time. Um... no. I’ve learned I need to be free to the inspiration of the moment, so I don’t define every detail in outline because I like to let it flow as I work. Admittedly, that sometimes doesn’t work out and I have to go back and re-write as something later seems like a much cooler way to handle the situation. My half-and-half system is the evolution of my process and I suspect it will continue to evolve.

Sara: Where did the idea for the Persephone Alcmedi series come from? Are they novels you have always wanted to write or did they sneak up on you?

Linda: I blame the po-boy I ate at the New Orleans airport while waiting for my flight. I was sitting there wondering what to write next, as I am a writer who has about ten useless manuscripts in the drawer. (My learning curve is LONG :) ) Johnny “appeared” first. They say write what you know... so he was Rock-n-roll Bad boy. But what if he’s just playing that role because of the tattoos. What if he didn’t get the tattoos... what if his memory is gone and he doesn’t know where they came from? He evolved that way. Persephone developed out of what his perfect woman would be and she took over.

Sara: One of my favorite characters is Persephone’s grandmother. Did you base this character off of a relative? Or did she come solely from your imagination?

Linda: Ahhh, Nana. Nana is my mother, my aunts, and my mother’s friends rolled into one. I was going to sprinkle her with CRASS, but it was one of those moments where the seasoning shaker’s inner lid was loose and I didn’t know it. She got a heaping helping of it. I want to do more with her, but this series is Persephone’s story. I may have to revisit Nana as a lead character later.

Sara: Can we look forward to more books in your Persephone Alcmedi series, after Arcane Circle?

Linda: Presently I am contracted for two more books. Wicked Circle is set for release in January 2012. The sixth book is not yet titled. I hope to do nine books. That’s the overarching plot I have worked out.

Sara: What are your influences both in and out of Urban Fantasy?

Linda: Jennifer Roberson, Sword Dancer series; Steven Brust, Jhereg series; Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, Dragonlance series, Darksword series, Rose of the Prophet series; Kim Harrison, Rachel Morgan series.

Sara: What are you currently reading?

Linda: Maria Lima’s Blood Heat.

Thanks again to Linda for stopping by and answering some questions. She has also offered up two copies of Arcane Circle to two lucky readers! All you have to do is answer Linda's question: How do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day -- and are you really Irish?

Review: The Mermaid's Mirror by L.K. Madigan

Title: The Mermaid's Mirror
Author: L.K. Madigan
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: 10/04/10

The Book Depository
Summary:
Lena has lived her whole life near the beach -- walking for miles up and down the shore and breathing the salty air, swimming in the cold water, and watching the surfers rule the waves -- the problem is, she’s spent her whole life just watching.

As her sixteenth birthday approaches, Lena vows she will no longer watch from the sand: she will learn to surf.

But her father –- a former surfer himself –- refuses to allow her to take lessons. After a near drowning in his past, he can’t bear to let Lena take up the risky sport.

Yet something lures Lena to the water... an ancient, powerful magic. One morning Lena catches sight of this magic: a beautiful woman -- with a silvery tail.

Nothing will keep Lena from seeking the mermaid, not even the dangerous waves at Magic Crescent Cove.

And soon... what she sees in the mermaid’s mirror will change her life...

Plot: 3.5 Stars
The first half of this novel came off very comtemporary, as compared to paranormal. Except for two paragraphs at the end of two chapters, there was no mention of mermaids until past the halfway mark. It wasn't necessarily a bad thing, it just wasn't what I expected. I'm a paranormal lover, so I want the creatures to be hiding in every corner. But this novel was very restrained. Even after the idea of the mermaid was brought up, it was another fifty pages or so until Lena actually sees and talks to one. But once we meet the merpeople, the lore behind them is very interesting. My favorite part of the story is how the author wove surfing into the story. It was every interesting to read about, and none of the descriptions were confusing to someone who does not surf.

Pace: 3 Stars
The pace of this novel was very strong in the beginning. The first two thirds of the novel flew by, even with the lack of paranormal. When the idea of mermaids finally came up, the pace slowed down a bit. It seemed like Lena dwelled on the topic quite a bit, with little action going on around her. Then she pace slowed even further once she entered the ocean to meet more merpeople. Many of the underwater scenes didn't seem to further the plot much. Lena also seemed like a totally different person while she was underwater, and it was a bit weird. A bit of the problems in these later scenes is explained near the end, but there were still some unnecessary scenes underwater.

Characters: 4 Stars
All of the characters in this novel were developed very thoroughly. Lena was a very complex teenager, but not in the normal adolescent ways. She came across very mature at times, while still acting like a kid. The love she felt for her parents and her brother really shined through. Her little brother was a very cute character, and I'm glad he played such a large role. Siblings, especially younger ones, are not that common in paranormal young adult novels. Her best friends were great characters. The author was able to bring them into Lena's life without them getting in the way of the story. They actually helped bring the story together through surfing.

Cover: 3 Stars
Although the cover really resonates with the main character Lena, and her love for the ocean, it's a bit washed out. The ocean in the background seems a bit too quiet and dull. A breaking wave or a brighter blue would really draw the eye to an important element to the story. Although it is cloudy and rainy during parts of the novel, I think this cover could've used a ray of sunshine peeking through the clouds. It would fit the mood of the story a bit more. But I loved that the cover model is facing away from the reader, and towards the ocean. Even without seeing the cover model's face, I can feel her longing for the sea.

Overall: 3.5 Stars

Disclosure: I bought this novel for my own reading pleasure.

Review: Married with Zombies by Jesse Petersen

Title: Married with Zombies
Author: Jesse Petersen
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release Date: 09/01/10
Buy the Book:
The Book Depository
Summary:
A heartwarming tale of terror in the middle of the zombie apocalypse.

Meet Sarah and David.

Once upon a time they met and fell in love. But now they're on the verge of divorce and going to couples' counseling. On a routine trip to their counselor, they notice a few odd things -- the lack of cars on the highway, the missing security guard, and the fact that their counselor, Dr. Kelly, is ripping out her previous client's throat.

Meet the Zombies.

Now, Sarah and David are fighting for survival in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. But, just because there are zombies, doesn't mean your other problems go away. If the zombies don't eat their brains, they might just kill each other.

Plot: 2.5 Stars
I was a little let down by this novel. The tagline on the back cover reads, "A romantic comedy with... BRAAAINS!" But this novel didn't come across as much of a romantic comedy for me because there wasn't much humor to it. There were a couple of interesting scenes that bordered on funny and a couple of one-liners, but I definitely wouldn't consider it a romantic comedy. It felt more like an Urban Fantasy or Horror novel about a zombie apocalypse. The only thing that set this novel apart from the majority of zombie novels and movies was that the main characters were a couple whose marriage was on the verge of divorce. While it was interesting to see how the couple dealt with the apocolypse, the zombies and the apocolypse did not seem all that unique.

Pace: 3 Stars
The beginning of this novel was a quick and easy read. The action grabs you from the very first page, and doesn't let go. As the characters rush around and try not the get eaten, the pace of the novel keeps up without feeling rushed. But at about the halfway mark, things start to slow down just a bit. And a couple scenes start to feel a bit repetitive. There's only so many times the zombies can sneak up on a person before it gets a bit monotonous. Although my interested did pick back up when Sarah and David ran into some humans that were just as freaky and dangerous.

Characters: 3.5 Stars
Sarah and David were an interesting couple. This was the first paranormal novel I've read that involved a married couple, let alone one that wasn't all that happy together. Their relationship's dynamic was probably the best part of the novel. Wondering whether or not they would survive the zombie apocalypse divorce-free kept me reading. There were also a number of strange people they met along the way. Considering they didn't stay in any one place for much time, the people they came across were pretty well-rounded for acquaintances. Amanda, their neighbor, was one of the few characters that stuck around for more than a chapter, and although she was a bit naive, she did help the couple out for a while.

Cover: 3 Stars
This novel has a very interesting cover. My favorite part is the line of zombie silouettes in the background because it looks like they're chasing after the silouettes of the main characters. Or dancing. The broken heart around the title was a nice touch, considering the premise of the novel. The hot pink really popped against the gray background and was a very interesting choice considering the book is about a zombie apocalypse. My main gripe with this cover is that the spine of the novel is very bland. It's just the gray background with the title in black. Considering the spine is most likely the only part of the novel showing on the shelf, there's nothing there to really catch the eye. Including the hot pink from the cover would definitely grab a shoppers attention.

Overall: 3 Stars
