In My Mailbox (108)

Thanks to Kristi at The Story Siren for hosting In My Mailbox every week.

What a crazy week! First, I went to Jaclyn Dolamore's signing today. You can see my post about the event here. She was handing out Magic Under Stone ARCs. After the event, I went across the street to the used bookstore because they were having an overstock sale. I liberated some ARCs. The four ARCs I have listed under used books I purchased were all chilling out at the overstock building. I already own a finished copy of Legacies and don't read a lot of SciFi so Across the Universe doesn't appeal to me too much, but I grabbed all four because I didn't want anyone else making a profit off of them (ie, a regular consumer purchasing them and then selling them back somewhere in the future). I know not everyone will agree with me, but I felt like I needed to do something. I've never seen an ARC for sale in the actual store where they would be priced to make a profit (the overstock sale is in a separate building where they store extra books), but it definitely has me thinking about looking for a new used bookstore to shop at. I'll definitely be stalking RAK lists in the future, or maybe put together a giveaway. The six books from the overstock sale came to $5, so I don't think the bookstore made a profit perse on the ARCs if that makes anyone feel better. Anyway, after I got home, the mail man showed up at 6pm (crazy!) with lots of packages. All in all, it was definitely an interesting week to say the least.

  1. Epic mailbox there!

I don't like the idea of somone selling their ARC's either, it just seems rude. I either give mine away to other bloggers or keep them, they should be cherished if you are lucky enough to get them!

  4. Yeah, I usually donate my ARCs to the library bookstore when I'm done (if I don't use them for giveaways, but a lot of times they've already come out), since the profits just go to Friends of the Library. I also feel weird about that store anyway because the owner has a very political, very conservative blog. I hate it when business associate themselves with in-your-face political beliefs, but especially bookstores...I always feel like bookstores should be, like libraries, a welcome space for every sort of idea. But I still shop there because they always have killer additions to my non-fiction library... Argh, can't resist. Best Used Books at 17-92 and 434 is a nice store too, but more of a cheap, cluttered, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink type of store.

  5. My keeper shelf, I'm the same way. If an ARC has been signed to me, then I keep it (I try to buy a finished copy if I enjoyed it, but my finances don't always allow for this). If they're unsigned, I tended to pass them along through RAK. The only time I keep an unsigned ARC is if my girlfriend is interested in read it too (and I'll pass it along once she has).

Jessica, my TBR pile is definitely epic, and I don't read fast enough to catch up.

Jaclyn, I haven't been assaulted by anyone's political beliefs at that bookstore yet. I mostly go there because the clearance section always has good finds, and they give me fair credit. I've found another further down 436 that I like. She focuses more on romance, so we tend to find more PNR than UF. She gives fair credit also, but you must pay half credit/half cash. Leads me to spend more than planned. If I find more ARCs at that other bookstore, I'm gonna have to stop being so wussy and confront someone. o_O I still haven't found a used bookstore around here with a good YA selection. At least the libraries are getting better.
