Review: Mercy Thompson: Homecoming by Patricia Briggs

Title: Mercy Thompson: Homecoming
Author: Patricia Briggs
Genre: Graphic Novel
Release date: 08/25/09
Summary:
Mercy Thompson is a walker, a magical being with the power to transform into a coyote. She lives on the fine line dividing the everyday world from a darker dimension, observing the supernatural community while standing apart.

When Mercy travels to the Tri-Cities of Washington for a job interview, she quickly finds herself smack-dab in the middle of a gang war between rival packs of werewolves. And as if fangs and fur weren’t bad enough, Mercy must deal with the scariest creature of all: her mother, who is convinced that Mercy is making a mess of her life and determined to set her daughter on the right course.

Plot: 4 Stars
The story felt a little rushed. I understand that a graphic novel is more visual than reading a novel, but it just seemed to jump around a little bit. I liked the bits and pieces of the past brought in, but it was hard to differenciate it from the present. I did like the overall story though. It gave a little more insight into how Mercy got to the Tri Cities to begin with.

Pace: 4 Stars
This is a hard category to judge. On one hand, I felt like the story was too rushed. But on the other hand, I can't imagine it reading so smoothly if the pace was slower. It works well for a graphic novel. I just don't think I'm much of a graphic novel person. More visual people will definitely enjoy it.

Characters: 3.5 Stars
There wasn't enough character building for me. You will definitely want to read the Mercy Thompson books first (series starts with Moon Called) to get a better handle on the characters.

Cover: 5 Stars
The cover, along with the rest of the artwork in this graphic novel was phenomenal. Although some of the character portrayals didn't match the ones in my head, they still worked.

Overall: 4 Stars

Disclosure: I bought this book for my own enjoyment.

Review: Tainted by Julie Kenner

Title: Tainted
Author: Julie Kenner
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release date: 10/27/09
Summary:
Lily Carlyle has lied, cheated, and stolen her way through life.

But in death, she'll really get to be bad...

When her little sister is brutalized, a vengeful Lily determines to exact her own justice. She succeeds at the cost of her own life, but as she lies dying, she is given a second chance. Lily can earn her way into Paradise by becoming an assassin for the forces of good.

It's the job Lily believes she can really get into-but she doesn't realize that she may not be able to get out.

Plot: 4 Stars
It's not every day that a book completely blindsides me. I don't always figure books out before I finish, but when Tainted came to the revelation portion near the end, I was blown away. I was expecting anything except for the direction the story actual turned. The ending did feel a little rushed and lacking finality, but it's not the end of the world because the next book in the series comes out 11/24 and the third sometime in December.

Pace: 4.5 Stars
The story grabbed me quickly and didn't let go. Although it took me a couple days to finish, each time I sat down, I read at least 80 pages at once. The shorter chapters definitely helped expedite the story along, but the main reason it read at such a quick pace is that there wasn't much downtime between action scenes.

Characters: 4 Stars
Although I loved the dynamic between Lily and many of the characters, I felt like we didn't really get to know anyone besides Lily.

Cover: 4 Stars
I liked the font choice for the title and the cover model definitely had some attitude, but I felt like this read like every other urban fantasy cover. If I hadn't gone to the store specifically to pick this book up after seeing some early reviews, I may have passed it by.

Overall: 4 Stars

Disclosure: I bought this book for my own enjoyment.

Saturday Series Spotlight (3)

Today I'll be featuring Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series. This was one of the first series I read that had me venturing into the Romance section. I would've never known that there were so many awesome paranormal romances if it wasn't for these books. I love the dynamic between Cat and Bones.

Reading Order:
Halfway to the Grave
One Foot in the Grave
At Grave's End
Destined for an Early Grave

Here's a summary of the first book in the series, Halfway to the Grave:
Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother's life. Then she's captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership.

In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She's amazed she doesn't end up as his dinner—are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn't have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side... and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

Feel free to leave a comment about the series if you love it, any questions if you're interested in the series, or a link to your own series spotlight if you'd like to participate.
